Clinic Floor Plan
Clinic Floor Plan
Sunday May 17th

I'm sorry there hasn't been an update in so long!  The past three months have been an absolute whirlwind of activity.  So many of you have come by the clinic to check on our progress, often offering a helping hand.  Others have kept an eye on us as they travel North Lee Highway.  We are getting there, step by step.
Guy Pearl, owner of Pearl Electric, has completed all the electrical work including 52 fluorescent lights!  Thanks to his professionalism and dedication we passed our electrical inspection with flying colors.
Keith Gravel Hauling delivered the gravel and spread it to form our parking lot.
After checking and rechecking codes we now have a porch, steps and ramp.
After almost daily trips to Lowe's and 8 carpenters the interior renovations are complete. We have added walls, doors, sheet-rocked, patched and painted and moved entire sections of cabinetry.  We installed three windows to let in the beautiful sunshine. Surgery lights are up and cages are in. The list goes on and the hours spent seem countless but now we have a beautiful clinic with a floor-plan that flows perfectly.
B&C Carpet gave us an unbelievable deal on  1440 sq. feet of beautiful, shiny vinyl flooring.

Our biggest challenge has been plumbing!  What we estimated to be $1000 turned out to be $5000.  At last Plumber #11, Ralph Farkas with Above All Plumbing, is working with us and helping us to reduce cost.  After 3 months of negotiating and yes, begging, we now have running water.  With a total of 8 sinks, a washing machine and restrooms there is still work to do but all plumbing should be complete by Friday, May 22nd.
Our building is heated and cooled by two commercial units.  When our electric was connected we were, at first, disappointed to learn that only one unit worked. Then we decided to be happy that one worked perfectly!  It was a bit of a financial setback but now both are up and running with the promise of keeping our patients at optimum temperature.

This week we'll be cleaning our clinic from top to bottom inside and out.  We'll be landscaping and putting on the final touches.

The next few weeks we will be raising money so we can purchase the last few items we need and place our very first supply and drug order.

Stop by and see us, we're still a work in progress but we are very, very close to opening our doors and start saving lives.

Saturday at 11am nine volunteers from Lee University came to our building.  They wasted no time getting to work.  In the blink of an eye 1440 sq. feet of old floor tile was removed - that was before lunch!  One half of the building was taped and primed, to be painted soon.
Our angel electrician will be starting this week.
The plumber and trencher are meeting at 8am Monday morning to start work so we will soon have running water.
Another, in our long list of angels, has loaded up awnings and is headed to Tennessee with them.
We are currently searching for a carpenter (who also has a halo!) who can donate his time.  We need two walls built, one 8' wide and the other 15' wide.  We also need some wall and ceiling repair. If you know anyone with carpentry skills please let us know.
And then there's one of the biggest jobs left to do.  The new vinyl. floor needs to be installed.  No sub-floor is needed.  We are desperately searching for someone who will donate their time to this project.
Yet another angel has donated windows which will let in glorious natural light and greatly improve the looks of our building from the outside.

Getting there,
Betti

Friday:
After arriving home in the wee hours of the night with our 'loot' from Douglas GA it (the loot) was safely delivered to the lot and unloaded on the concrete pad.
We got a lower estimate for plumbing - $1000.  Much better than the first estimate of $2950.  I'm checking out some people he has done work for on Monday and if all checks out it will be a go.
One half of the building was leveled and blocked in - getting ready to be joined to its other half!
Saturday:
THE HALVES ARE REUNITED AT LONG LAST!!!  All blocked in and level.
To make the rejoining complete we will:
Bolt underneath and sides together, cap off the roof at the seam, get all the tie downs in place and we're good to go!
Hopefully we'll get some of this done tomorrow.  Our angel electrician will be hooking us up soon - maybe this week. Once the plumber starts it will only take a couple days to finish.
We must have water and electricity by Jan. 31st.  We have TWENTY volunteers coming from Lee University that day.  They will remove the floor tiles (to get ready for our new vinyl) and paint.  Our new floor will be a big expense.  If you have any connections with anyone who sells flooring please let me know.  This will be a very labor intensive, expensive job so we are desperately searching for someone who will lay the vinyl at no or very little cost.  Do you know anyone?  Let's all put our thinking caps on for this one!
Hopefully more good news Sunday night.

Today our building was placed on the concrete footers. Yes, this was accomplished while the snow poured down!  Our precious crew of free laborers will come back Friday to reunite the two halves - what a happy day that will be.
Our angel electrician who is donating his time will be checking everything out tomorrow.  We have the first bid on the plumbing and it is sky high $2950.00.  Let's hope the others will come in much lower.  We'll be getting two more estimates tomorrow.
After water and electric the next big expense will be replacing the old vinyl floor with new heavy duty vinyl.  Again, if you know anyone who has this skill and would donate their time please let me know.  It will be a big job - 1440 square feet - but will make a huge difference in the appearance of the interior.

Getting there........

Concrete was poured today.  I got a stick and wrote '20 year dream' on one of the footers.  Now we wait 48 hours until it sets.

January 14, 2009
We now have an official address.  Originally our lot had a Harpo Street address - not good since Harpo Street is a residential street.  The Dixie Day Spay is officially located at;

182 AIRPORT ROAD!!!!!

January 13, 2009
Our footers/rebar passed inspection with flying colors.  Cleveland Ready Mix will come tomorrow at 12:30 to pour the concrete at a cost of $274.00 - much better than the first estimate of $2000.00!  Paul (God love him) will volunteer his time to spread the concrete.  After it 'sets' (48 hours) our building will be moved in place and at long last the two halves reunited!

We have an electrician who is a total angel and will donate his time to get our electricity hooked up and running.  We're searching for a plumber who can donate his time or give us a very good deal.  If any come to mind please let me know.

Thanks - till next time!
Betti

After waiting 3 months for a zoning change then facing bad weather and the Holidays we are finally getting somewhere.  Our building was moved (who knew we shouldn't hve put it exactly where we wanted it, but beside where we actually wanted it!) and the footers dug.  Today, rebar was put in place to brace the footers.  The city will come inspect the work   (hopefully today) then concrete will be poured.  Slowly getting there.......................

November 10, 2008
At 4:22PM today the property our building is sitting on was rezoned from residential to commercial.

Two major announcements were made by director, Betti Gravelle.  The group has purchased a commercial modular building to be used as a spay/neuter clinic and a private donor has pledged $10,000 for equipment. “This puts us well on our way to making spay/neuter surgery affordable for all” stated board member Larry Burns.  The fun-filled event raised $1800.00 to aid in the set-up of the low-cost clinic.
